Heather A. J. Morton, M.Ed., B.Ed., B.F.A., (Spec. Hons.) Since 1999, Heather has made 9 annual pilgrimages to India to study yoga, meditation and Sanskrit. During each visit she has spent 2-3 months in India. She holds many certificates of yoga and has stayed at ashrams in India, Canada and the United States. Her extensive background also includes research and writing on Yoga in the educational system. Heather has studied under Shri K. Pattabhi Jois and Yogacharya Venkatesha in Mysore. Yogacharya , a champion in back bending. For each of the last 8 years, Heather has studied directly under Yogacharya, becoming one of his most senior students. In 2002 and 2005, she was certified by Yogacharya to teach the primary and secondary system of AtmaVikasa Yoga. She is the first Western yoga teacher to have been certified at the second level. More
With over 14 years of teaching experience, Heather has taught yoga in hospitals, community centers, corporations, both public and private schools and in a rehabilitation clinic. She has worked with a medical doctor and physiotherapist as part of a multi-disciplinary team using yoga to treat physical injuries. Her first experiences teaching yoga began in Seoul, South Korea, where she spent two years working as an English teacher. While in India, Heather devotes her time to helping children learn English.
Heather’s approach to teaching yoga is traditional, with insights and knowledge gained from her academic education. She holds a degree in theatre performance and master’s of education. In 2005, she completed her post graduate work on yoga in the educational system. Her master's thesis was an extensive ethnographic study on Yoga as a curriculum subject in a private school located in India. Heather has lectured and conducted seminars in many Ontario Universities, including OISE (The Ontario Institute of Educational Studies), York and McGill University. She is both a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and the International Association of Yoga Therapists.
Prior to Yoga, Heather had started a promising acting and modeling career. Feeling estranged from the acting world, Heather changed the course of her life by living in South Korea for two years. While in Korea, she became interested in Eastern traditions and religion, and began to teach yoga to adults and children. From that time onward Heather’s life work has been devoted to Yoga.
